My God, My God
-
The power of speech is made evident in this setting of the psalm for Palm Sunday (of the Lord’s Passion). Intended for minimal voice and instrument, this piece places us at the foot of the Cross with Jesus — doubting, fearful and alone (verses 1-3). This great psalm of lament concludes with a verse of praise and consummate surrender to God’s perfect will for us (verse 4). Therefore, it is important to sing all four verses.
This piece could also be used effectively during the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, as a common psalm during Holy Week, as well as for services whose themes focus on faith, hope, petition, salvation, or suffering — both physical and spiritual.
