Commissioned by Joan Maher and the parish of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in St. Louis, Missouri, this
song was loosely based on the Pentecost Sequence, which is read on the Feast of Pentecost. It is also
based on the struggle this parish was experiencing; the closing of three churches and the reopening as
one, where all communities were called to create one new charism.
Of course, this song is sung on Pentecost and at celebrations of the sacrament of Confirmation. But, as
well, the nature of the verses makes it a rousing and beautiful gathering song for any Mass during the
festive times of the Church year. It also includes a theme of surrender to the Holy Spirit and discernment
of the divine call to live a life in the Spirit.
